The Cost of Certainty

I was telling a friend how I had started adding more protein to my diet. Before I could even finish explaining - alongside the fiber and good fats I've always prioritized - he laughed. "Oh, so you're on the protein train now!"
I felt myself pause. The protein train? The one where people are consuming 130, 150, sometimes 200 grams a day? Where protein becomes the entire conversation about nutrition?

"Actually, no," I said. "I'm trying to get to 90 grams instead of the 40 I was getting. There's a pretty significant gap between where I'm heading and that 'train.'"
I had to clarify - I was supplementing because I'd been on the low side, and wanted to bump it up based on where I am in life now. Just because we reach a certain age or work out a little more doesn't mean we need to go from zero to a hundred. The moderate adjustment was all my body actually needed.
He understood once I explained. But what stayed with me wasn't the misunderstanding itself - it was how quickly "adding protein" became "huge protein advocate." How the entire spectrum between 40 grams and 200 grams just... disappeared. Collapsed into binary thinking: you're either on the train or you're not.
And once I started noticing this pattern, I couldn't stop seeing it everywhere.
The Pattern
Somewhere along the way, we've stopped seeing spectrums of choices and opinions. We've been conditioned to think in binaries. Either/or. This side or that side. All in or all out.
So how does this translate to other areas of our lives? I promised this was bigger than a nutrition post, right?
I see it when someone decides to be more mindful about their well-being, and suddenly they feel compelled to meditate for 60 minutes a day to "do it right." As if there's no middle ground between doing nothing and complete dedication. As if 10 minutes of quiet reflection doesn't count.
I see it when we set boundaries at work - suddenly we're worried we'll be seen as "not committed" or "not a team player." As if wanting to leave at a reasonable hour means we don't care about our work. The possibility that someone might be both dedicated AND boundaried? That nuance gets erased.
And I see it when someone mentions they're reconsidering a long-held belief. Immediately, others want to know: "So you've completely switched sides now?" As if updating your thinking when you encounter new information means abandoning everything you once knew. As if growth and evolution equal betrayal.
And here's what makes this particularly insidious: we're no longer making choices based on what actually serves us or what we genuinely believe. We're making choices - or feeling pressure to make choices - based on which "team" we want to be seen as part of.
Do I adjust my protein intake because my body needs it, or because someone told me I should? Do I avoid setting boundaries because I genuinely love my work, or because I'm afraid of being labeled as "not committed"? Do I hold onto a belief I'm questioning because I actually still believe it, or because changing my mind might make me look like I'm switching teams?
The spectrum collapses. The middle ground evaporates. And we're left with only the extremes - both in how we judge ourselves and how we judge others. Worse, our choices become less about truth or personal need, and more about tribal signaling.
The Cost
So what does this cost us?
On a personal level, it keeps us stuck. It's easier to land at the edges - where answers feel immediate and clear, where we don't have to do the hard work of thinking from different angles. But here's what binary thinking misses: we evolve. Our circumstances change. Our bodies change. The world around us changes. What served us before might not serve us now - and that's not failure, that's adaptation. When we can't make adjustments without it feeling like a complete reversal, we lose that flexibility. We can't learn. We can't grow.
It affects how we relate to each other, too - and I include myself here. How often do we react with judgment instead of engaging with genuine curiosity? Instead of asking "what are you learning?" we jump to conclusions about what someone's shift means. Creating space for genuine exploration means getting comfortable with the process of changing our minds - in ourselves and in others. It means recognizing that adjusting our thinking isn't betrayal, it's growth.
But the cost compounds.
When nuance collapses into binaries, we lose our ability to navigate complexity. Problems that require holding multiple truths at once - that need both/and thinking rather than either/or - become unsolvable. We can't find solutions that honor different needs because we've erased the middle ground where those solutions live.
Everything becomes a loyalty test instead of an opportunity for sense-making. We mistake certainty for strength, when really it's rigidity. We confuse nuance with weakness, as if the ability to hold complexity or adjust our thinking means we lack conviction. When actually, it takes more strength to navigate nuance than to simply pick a side and defend it.
When we approach challenges this way, we lose our capacity for the very thing we need most - the ability to hold space for complexity without fracturing.
This isn't just inconvenient. It's costing us our ability to think clearly and navigate the actual complexity we're facing.

The Possibility
So what becomes possible when we reclaim the middle ground?
We get to make decisions based on our actual circumstances rather than which "side" we're supposed to be on. We can adjust our approach when context changes - not because we were wrong before, but because we're paying attention now. We create space for real conversation. When someone shares they're reconsidering something, we can get curious instead of defensive. We might actually learn something. And that's what "bettering" is all about.
Here's what this looks like in practice:
Instead of looking for the one "right" way to eat, you get curious about what healthy eating actually looks like for you. You learn what protein does, how carbs serve you, what your body needs at this stage of life. You stop looking for the perfect diet and start paying attention to what actually nourishes you - which might be different at 45 than it was at 30, different when you're more active than when you're recovering, different based on a dozen other factors.
It's the same whether it's the choices we make about ourselves or how we relate to others. When we stop collapsing complexity into binaries, we create space for what actually fits - for ourselves and for the people around us.
This is what I often think of as the Vibrant Middle - that rich territory between extremes where sustainable approaches actually live. Not bland compromise. Not settling. But the sophisticated space where we can hold complexity without forcing it into categories that don't fit.
Choosing nuance over reflex isn't avoidance. It's responsibility. It's refusing to let complexity be erased for the sake of certainty. It's being honest that most situations require more thought than a quick binary choice allows.
This doesn't mean we can't have convictions or take stands. It means recognizing that what works for us - what serves our circumstances, our bodies, our lives - might not be what works for someone else. We get to be clear about our own choices while making space for others to navigate their own complexity. We can hold our convictions without needing everyone else to adopt them.
Maybe the place to start is just noticing: Where am I treating a spectrum like a binary? Where am I making choices based on what I think I'm supposed to do rather than what actually makes sense for me? Not to judge ourselves - just to see it.
Because once we start seeing the pattern, we can't unsee it. And that awareness itself creates possibility.
